This project was undertaken for
Graetz Media and
DRD Interactive. Black Dot Digital was contracted in 2006 to deliver a Flash based CDRom directory for the Department of State Development.
The project was a widely distributed Mining Industry Services directory containing information on over 100 companies.
The original project was implemented in Flash on the ARP platform powered by XML based data. That project was delivered successfully and when we were approached to develop a simialr disc for 2007 we successfully encouraged our partners to switch to Flex. This shortened the development time considerably and even more importantly allowed for much easier implementation of the new features required in the 2007 version of the project. Namely improved text search, and printing capability.
Attempts to implement similar search features in the original disc had been abandoned due to detrimental performance overheads. This was not the case in the 2007 version of the project as the dramatically improved performance in the underlying Flex / Flash player 9 runtime enabled a much more intuitive search engine to be built without performance overheads.
Printing content from Flash has in the past been a shortcoming of the platform but Flex implements this much needed feature in very straight forward manner. The 2007 version of the directory allows user to print an A4 datasheet of any company directly from that companies listing.
